Carnival crowd watching traditional Mooswief on a pole at Vrijthof square Maastricht Netherlands
The Mooswief is an important local Carnival symbol depicting a Maastricht housewife on her way to market for vegetables fruit and groceries. The dummy replica is put up on a pole for the entire duration of carnival. At midnight on Shrove Tuesday carnival is officially ended when she is brought down by the Carnival Prince and the keys to the city are handed back to the Mayor.
