Spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta). This is the largest and most powerful of all the hyenas. It lives alone or in family groups, feeding on the carcasses of large herbivores. However, it can also attack and tear apart live prey and will often take newborn calves, which it obtains by following herbivore herds during the breeding season. C. crocuta is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa, in savannah and open grassland. Photographed in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, in South Africa and Botswana.
