Clerkenwell (London UK)workhouse soon after its enlargement in 1790 (Coppice Row,now 143-157 Farringdon Road). The original workhouse was built under the provisions of Knatchbull's Act in 1727. Residents were employed spinning Mop-Yarn, and picking Ockam (Oakum). Children were educated in reading and reciting catechism and in the art of spinning. An infirmary was also added. We are told that the residents were "content to be restrained from strolling abroad, in Hunger and Nakedness"
