Fracturesare relatively more frequent in adults, while greenstick fracture andseparation of epiphyses are more prevalent in injuries occurring before theepiphyses have joined up with the SESAMOID BONES 153 The after history of an injury is greatly influenced in its results when theinjury occurs in the neighbourhood of the epiphyseal line. Arrested develop-ment is a frequent result of such an injury. There are, therefore, certainpoints which should be remembered in relation to the principal joints of thebody which will be briefly mentioned, reference to figures illustrating thesepoints being made as occasion arises. Sesamoid Bones.—These are small rounded masses, cartilaginous inearly life, osseous in the adult, which are developed in tendons whichexert a great amount of pressure upon those parts over which they is said that they are more commonly found in the male than in thefemale, and in persons of an active muscular habit than in those whoare weak and debilitated.
