After leaving the valley of the To, the roads became increasinglyworse and in some places were more theoretical than real. The diffi-culties of travel were lightened bv an amusing, though, at the time,probably annoying, incident with a mule, which may be quoted inGrahams own laconic, matter-of-fact language.
