The Wallace Monument At Night

Funded by subscription The Wallace Monument was completed in 1869 after eight years of construction. At 220 feet (67m) in height, with 246 steps, the monument sits atop Abbey Craig two miles to the north of Stirling. It was from here on 11 September in 1297 that William Wallace lead the Scots to victory against the English in the Battle of Stirling Bridge. After the battle, Wallace was knighted and became Sir William Wallace "Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland and leader of its armies". After defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298, Wallace was betrayed and captured. He was hanged, drawn and quartered in London in 1305. The Wallace Monument is a striking monument to a national hero who is a symbol for both Scotland and Freedom.
