Compared to the zones from hydra reared in continuous light (Fig. 2), the results shown in Figure 3 may be summarized as follows: Zones 1 and 2 have fewer algae (averaging approximately 6 and 7 per digestive cell, respectively). Zone 3 had approximately the same number of algae (11 symbionts per digestive cell) as hydra grown in continuous light. These data show that the numbers and proportions of algae in Zones 1 and 2 (Fig. 2).
