Lalibela, Amhara region, Ethiopia. A woman cleans herself in the backyard of her house on the outskirts of Lalibela. After the fall of the Axum kingdom in the 12th century, the kings of the Zagwe dynasty moved to Lalibela, on the southeast of Axum. They built here a prosperous and populated capital of the medieval dynasties. Lalibela, was formerly known as Roha until the late 12th century, then changed its name in honor of King Lalibela.
