Day for the Decriminalization of Abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean, is an initiative of the movement of Latin American and Caribbean women, who fight for the decriminalization of abortion, within the framework of democracy, human rights and social justice. September 28 was assumed as the day for the decriminalization of abortion, in the framework of the V Feminist Meeting of Latin America and the Caribbean, held in San Bernardo, Argentina, in the year 1990. This proposal was made by the Brazilian delegation, to rescue on September 28, 1888, when in Brazil the freedom of bellies was declared, ensuring the freedom of all children born to slave women. From this moment, the organizations committed to the campaign, organize and promote every year actions to sensitize society and influence governments about the serious problem of public health, human rights, social justice and gender equity that entails unsafe and illegal abortion; hence, the need to generate public policies to decriminalize it
