The Aliwal Shoal was first re-ported in 1848 by a distinguishedmariner, Sir James Anderson, whoafterwards became Managing Directorof the Eastern Telegraph his first command he wasbringing immigrants to Natal, andkeeping close in shore to avoid thestrength of the Mozambique current,he noticed the seas breaking overthis shoal which was not shewn onthe chart ; he named the shoal afterhis vessel, the Aliwal.
