Its characteristics as a locomotive fuel were thereforewell known. The Lloydell coal is a very friable, low-volatile bitumi-nous coal, and the carloads selected for the tests consisted of run ofmine. They were loaded and shipped under the supervision of J. , of the Geological Survey. The coal was exposed to theweather for thirty days on the way to the St. Louis testing plant,.
