But when a shipdocks in the day time, some time elapsesbefore all baggage is placed in the shed, and the first passengers through the im-migration inspection have to wait untilthe baggage shed is ready. Last autumnthe need for a modern waiting r,oom wasmet by the construction of a large wait-ing room over one end of the baggageshed, which can be reached from the cov-ered passageway across the tracks. Thisroom is 113 x 52 ft., provided with seatsaround the walls, in the form of threesides of a square in each structural bay, with seating capacity for 300 accommodation of modern sani-tary type is provided and also a nursery, fitted with cots and chairs. With the returning tide ofpassenger business since the war, andthe greatly increased European immi-gration movement, were coupled a changeof routing of steamships, whichmade St. John the first port of call, andalso a very greatly increased stringencyin both Canadian and customs andimmigration regulations. The result wasthat the facilities at St. John were foundto be entirely inadequate; custom exami-nation of baggage was obliged to be car-ried out on the floor of the open wharfshed, with great hardship to passengersand officials. In the early winter of1919-20, a steam heated baggage shedwas erected, parallel to and in the rearof the wharf shed, upon a site which hadpreviously been occupied by cattle pensand tracks. Work was started on , 1919, and the new building was readyfor use in two months, on Jan. 15, building is 500 x 60 ft., with cov-ered platforms x>n both sides. Three linesof tracks
