Head of a Rhinoceros, Half Submerged in the Water. As a professor of drawing, anatomy and proportions at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, August Allebé regularly took his students to draw in Artis Zoo. He was known as a friendly, yet critical teacher who made his students practice until they got the depiction right. To set a good example, he also made studies of the animals during these lessons.
