Proposal for Law of Octaves. Letter in the 18th August 1865 edition of 'Chemical News' from the British chemist John Newlands (1837-1898) proposing that the chemical elements display a 'Law of Octaves'. Newlands had noticed that if elements were arranged in order of their atomic mass, then each element was similar to the element eight places ahead of it. He proposed that these similarities could be used to arrange the elements in to a table. At the time Newland's idea was ridiculed and it took over 20 years for the importance of his research to be recognised.
