City of Tali and Marco Polo

"In this country, old dust is found in great the rivers and lakes," wrote Marco Polo of Lake Tali (also called Carajan) in southwestern China. Marco Polo was a Venetian traveler who left Venice, Italy, with his father and brother in 1271, arrived in China in 1275 where Kublai Khan had his court, and returned home in 1294. This illustration of Lake Tali appeared in the 1874 edition of famed French novelist Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days."
