The system nowembraces 577 miles of owned and leased lines ofrailroad, besides the controlling interest in the threeSound steamboat lines. The Old Colony also con-trols the Union Freight Railway, the tracks of whichextend along the water-front from its own system tothat of the Boston & Maine. This road is a dis-tributor of freight among all the steam railroadsentering the city, and to leading wharves for ladingsteanishi])s and other vessels.
