Optical illusion. This illusion demonstrates that the perception of rotation can vary with the stimulus applied and the way in which the illusion is observed. If this image is rotated around its central point, the observer will perceive the concentric circles rotating in the direction of rotation. However, the central toothed circle will rotate more slowly in the opposite direction. This is one of a class of optical illusions where rotation varies in direction depending on whether central or peripheral vision is involved.
