CHAPTER IX. THE HYMENOPTERA. Bees, Wasps, Ants, Saw-flies, etc. There is no order of greater interest than this, containing as it does the bees, wasps, and ants, the most useful as well as the most intelligent of the insects. By treating them last, the inten- tion is not to suggest that they are lowest, but rather that they are the culminating point in the development of the class. Here we find social organizations not unlike some of our own systems of government, but more complete and running much more.
