There is a great deal of noise about the rise in the price of coal and many foolish things appear in the papers. In an interview I had today with a coal man he assured me the above condi- tions, as I have represented them, are true. He asserts positively that none of the large companies has raised the price of coal or taken advantage of the scarcity and the ever-increasing de- mand. They are trying to satisfy all customers by giving them at least a part of their order, but in no case are they able to supply the full wants. I asked him if it would be possible to get coal from his company to send to any florists who might be in urgent need of coal. He said: "It would be impossible to get it to anyone oflF our line of railway; the selling is all han- dled from the New York ; The large companies at the time of the big strike in 1902 did not raise the price of coal above the agreed market price at that time, viz.: $5; and they are now not raising their price. If the public in general understood this they would have a different feeling toward the large companies, for they are offered better prices than they are asking. The individual operators are getting the premium; the large com- panies are holding firm, and not taking advantage.
