Wliiteford House, nearly opposite this, was Sir John White-fords, and with the surrounding gardens occupies the site ofthe palace of the noble Earls of Wyntoun. In continuing our walk down the Canongate towards Holy-rood Palace, the third close from Galloways Entry, which leadsto Whiteford House, is White Horse Close, in which, in formertimes, was one of the principal inns of Edinburgh. The White 50 EDINBURGn. Horse Inn is understood to be the oldest place of the kind inthe city, and as seen from the North Back of the Canongate, exhibits perhaps more distinctly the characteristics of one ofour ancient hostelries. It was at this inn that Dr. Samuel. WHITE HOESE CLOSE. Johnson lodged in 1773. The house is now partitioned intodwelling-houses of the lowest class. The Ahhey Court House, as will be seen from the plate onthe door, is the place where protections are given to debtors, who, once their feet touch this hallowed ground, are free toroam at large over nearly the entire royal domain of Holy-rood, which includes nearly the whole of Arthurs the side of this building the traces of pointed arches willbe observed. These indicate the place where the old port orgateway to Holyrood joined the Abbey Court House, and whichformed the main entrance to the Palace. The abbots housewas connected with this on the north side, and with it formedone of the most ancient buildings in connection with hereditary keeper had his lodging in the gate-house, untilits removal in 17j3.
