14th century illustration of the Greek mythological figure Pygmalion in front of his statue. Pygmalion was a Cypriot sculptor who carved a statue of a woman and fell in love with it. After Pygmalion prayed to Aphrodite, the statue came to life and they married. Illustration from the continuation of Guillaume de Lorris's 'Roman de la Rose' by Jean de Meun, published in Paris, France, circa 1380.
