Diverticulosis. 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the colon (blue) of a 43 year old woman with diverticulosis. A diverticulum is a small pouch-like protrusion in a weak spot of the intestinal wall. Diverticula are thought to be caused by a low-fibre diet and lack of exercise. In most cases diverticula are symptomless. Occasionally, they can become inflamed and infected, a condition called diverticulitis, causing abdominal pain and constipation.
