Adolph Hitler inspecting his new 'Brown Shirts' in 1930 -(from a press picture of the time). They were also known as Braunhemden, Sturmabteilung, the SA, and Storm Detachment. Their primary purpose was to provide protection for Nazi rallies and other assemblies; and to disrupt the meetings and gatherings of any opposing SA developed pseudo-military titles and ranks for its members, that were later adopted by several other Nazi Party groups. Their name comes from their standard mode of dress.(Rudolph Hess can be seem immediately to the right behind Hitler).
