View along stone-lined leat (L) to restored horizontal watermill (L) & kiln house (R) used to dry damp grain before milling. Shawbost, Isle of Lewis.
Looking NNE along stone-lined leat (L) to restored horizontal water mill (L) & kiln house (R) used to dry damp grain before milling. Water diverted from stream into lower part of mill where it drives a horizontal paddle whose vertical shaft turns the upper of two millstones in the room above. The buildings were restored by James Crawford: thatched roofs held on with netting, ropes & stones, protruding poles are called raven-sticks.
