At the age of 19 years I openeda school in the vestry of the 13th Wardassembly rooms, where I taught quitea large number of pupils. Subse-(luently I learned the builders tradeunder Folsom and Romney. In 1865 Iaccompanied my father and others ona trip through southern Utah. Duringthe winter of 1866-67 I made a trip toI>iis Angeles, California, for merchan-. I was an active member of theTabernacle choir in Salt Lake City formany years, and also took part in thetheatricals of those earlier days. In1867. together with others, I was calledto go south and assist in the upbuild-ing of the Dixie country. My brotherand I stopped in St. George, Washing-ton county, where I followed my tradeas a carpenter and builder. June 23,1S69. I was appointed U. S. DeputyCollector of Internal Revenue for thesouthern district of Utah, to fill thevacancy caused by the death of my 800 LATTER-DAY SAINT brother Franklin. The settlers wereconsiderably harrassed by the NavajoIndians, and I participated in manyexpeditions against them. Oct. 8, 1^69,I married Mary Lavinia Bently in theEndowment House, Salt Lake the same year I was appointedclerk of the High Council of the Stake,
