Saint-Gaudens based the sculpture on an earlier bronze figure, Amor Caritas, which he had created for the Musée d'Orsay, Paris; another version of this is in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The features of the angel were modelled after those of his mistress, Davida Clark. .
