Bay and Rivers. There are six considerable rivers,which, with their numerous branches, peninsulate thestate, viz. The Delaware, Schuylkill, Susquehannah,Toughiogeny, Monongahela, and Alleghany, The bayand river Delaware are navigable from the sea to thegreat or lower falls at Trenton, 155 miles. The distanceof Philadelphia from the sea, is about 120 miles by theship channel of the Delaware. So far it is navigable fora 74 gun ship. Shallops go 35 miles farther, to Trenton falls. AtEaston it receives the Lehigh from the west, which isnavigable 30 miles. The Delaware river is navigable for. ( 67 ) boats that carry eight tons, one hundred miles aboveTrenton falls; and for Indian canoes, 150 miles. The Schuylkill rises N. W. of the Kittatinny mountains,passing through them in a south east direction, andthrough the limits of the western part of Philadelphia. Icempties into the Delaware, about six miles below the city. The north east branch of Susquehannah has its sourcein the lakes Otsego and Oiego, in the state of New receives the Tioga branch, three miles south of theboundary line, after crossing it three times. From Tioga,the Susquehannah proceeds southeast to Wilksbarre, andthen southwest to Sunbury, where it unites with the westbranch.
