Allergy to dressing. Rectangular pink rash seen on the skin of a 71 year-old patient after surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma. Post-operative suturing is seen and the rash is a reaction to the dressing used on the wound. This type of skin reaction, called contact dermatitis, is best dealt with by avoiding the substance that provokes it. Severe rashes can be controlled with corticosteroid drugs. Scratching should be avoided to prevent further damage to the skin, which could lead to infection. Basal cell carcinomas (or rodent ulcers) are the most common form of skin cancer in fair-skinned people.
