Our little settlement was 12 years old when (August 6, 1657) theship IVoodhouse brought to New Netherland a number of members ofthe Society of Friends. Some of them came to Long Island, and settledin Jamaica and Flushing. A proclamation was issued by the Dutchcolonial government, imposing a fine of £50 on any one who gaveshelter to a Quaker for one night, and authorizing the confiscation ofany vessel that brought Quakers to the Province.
