DOWN'S SYNDROME

Down’s syndrome, also termed trisomy 21, results from a chromosome anomaly where there are chromosomes 21 instead of two. This anomaly produces a mental handicap and a characteristic morphology. Other malformations (heart) may also be present. Trisomy 21 is a congenital disease. The risk increases with the age of the mother. Pregnant women older than 35 years are counseled to have an amniocentesis to diagnose the disease in utero.
