Fullest opportunity has beentaken by the architect to make the courtyard and garden a part of the house and theresult has been most successful. The details of iron grills, windows, wooden windowgrills, etc., have been handled with the sure touch of an art of high character and theeye runs from detail to detail with delight. For comparatively so small a home, thisresidence is unusually successful in execution. The entrance doorway is a bit Churri-guerresque, but the charm of color and refinement of detail of the mantels, mouldings andbeamed ceiling of the living room and other interiors, are original and in rare artisticspirit. 60 THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER. RESIDENCE OF MRS. MARY KEELEY908 OAK GROVE AVENUE, PASADENAROBERT D. FARQUHAR, ARCHITECT One of the ten most notable examplesof in Los Angeles, asselected by the recent Jury. THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER 61 Keeley Residence.—A white Colonial residence of simple, yet dignified proportions, sitting comfortably to the ground. This is a good example of a more formal and refinedtype of residence architecture than is inspired from the Spanish stjde, yet on account ofthat, presenting less opportunity for the fire, life and play of color and shadow offered bythe bright California sunshine. With its French windows and terraces, it fits well intoits environment and shows the strong feeling for closer relation of house and garden, that seems so obviously a thing to be sought in this garden country.
