These boilers were horizontal, internally-fired, drop-flue boilers, seven feet diameter and twenty-one feetlong, the shells, single riveted, originally five-sixteenthsof an inch thick. The two exploded boilers were made twenty-oneyears before the explosion, and worked, as their makersintended, at about thirty pounds per square inch, untilabout twenty months before the explosion, at whichtime additional power was required, and the pressurewas increased to, and limited at, fifty pounds.
