Dramatically beautiful Blea Tarn, one of the Lake District's innumerable small tarns, occupies a ridge between the Little Langdale Valley and Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale. The name blea derives from dark blue. Beneath the shadows of the rugged Langdale Pikes, the tarn stands 700' above sea level. Hardknott Pass, and then Wrynose Pass in the Lake District, is a single track road right through the middle of the Lake District, and is very steep and twisting. Hardknott Pass carries the minor motor road between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley. Wrynose Pass then continues, taking the road to the Langdale Valley, and on to Ambleside.
