D. 548. —Penda, the Mercian, attempted to burnit, in 672, by setting fire to piles ofwood laid against its walls; but the wind blowing contrary,the flames caught his own camp, and he was obliged toraise the siege. It was destroyed by the Danes in 993 ; butabout the time of the conquest it was again in good time afterwards the castle lost the greatest part of itsbeauty during a siege. In the reign of Elizabeth it was held by Sir John Forster,^s governor ; and his grandson obtained a grant of it, andthe manor, from James the First. His descendant forfeitedit in 1715; but this persons maternal uncle, Lord Crew,bishop of Durham, purchased the estate; and in 1720 be-. 200 AN ACCOUNT OF BAMBOROUGH CASTLE. queathed the castle and adjoining manor for charitable pur-poses. Under his will, it is in the hands of five clergymen,as trustees, who reside here in turn at their own Sharpe, about the year 1757, began the re-pairs of the castle, on which he expended large sums outof his own purse. Since his time much more has beendone, and various parts of this venerable fortress reclaimedfrom ruin. Bamborough Castle is a most imposing and magnificent-looking pile. It stands upon a basalt rock, of triangularshape, high, rugged, and abrupt, on the land side; flankedby the sea, and strong natural ramparts of sand, mattedtogether with sea-rushes, on the east; and accessible to anenemy only on the south-east, which is guarded by a deep,dry ditch, and a series of towers, in the wall, on each sideof the gateway* As this rock is the only one
