We were very much pleased with this new Lettuce, both in Germany and in our own trial grounds at Fordhook Farm. The illustration herewith, engraved from a photo- graph, gives some idea of its hand- some appearance. Every plant heads and the heads are uniformly shaped, very large and thick through, and of "a solidity equal to that of a cab- ; They measure about seven inches across the solid head; the leaves are slightly crumpled, of a beautiful greenish-yellow color, and for tenderness it is unsurpassed by any existing variety. It heads more raj>- idly than any of the large Lettuces and has the advantage of being unaf- fected by bad weather, even excess- ive rains seeming to have no unfavor- able influence upon it. The manager of our trial grounds, among other notes on this fine new Lettuce, stated: " It heads well and, taking all in all, is the finest Lettuce we have tested this season. It is of the most delicious, delicate ; Per pkt. 10 cts.; oz. 20 cts.; % ft 60 cts.; per ft The Deacon Lettuce. Those "who like a cabbage let- tuce with rich, buttery leaves of great substance, will be thor- oughly well pleased with " The Deacon," which is accurately shown in the illustration here- with, engraved from a photograph. It stands hot weather without be- coming bitter or running to seed, and bears fine, large heads of superb quality, light green out- side and within a beautiful cream- yellow, of delicious, rich, buttery flavor. It is the result of over forty years' careful selection in the familv of an amateur. Most highly recommended for both home use and to sell on market.
