Samuel Doak, the founder of theinstitution, was President of it. In the same year, and*before he had completed the course, he was married toMiss Judith Loyd McConnell, of Abingdon, Themarriage seems to have been hurried up by the fol-lowing circumstance: One day Mr. McConnell, the 1One account says she was of Tazewell, REV. The couplehad been engaged for some time, and they loved verymuch. Mr. Mathes began his teaching career as a member ofthe faculty of Washington College in 1823. At theclose of the term he removed to Athens as Principal ofthe Athens Seminary. In 1826 he was received into theMethodist Episcopal Church. In 1830 he removed toMadisonville to take charge of the Madisonville Acad-emy.
