H Rider Haggard lived in North Lodge, St Leonards oon Sea, Sussex for five years, from 1918-1923. the Lodge was designed and built by James Burton who also costructed a toll road from there to meet the London to hastings road. Later it was lived in by his daughters who cared for Decimus Burton in his old age. It is said that Haggard was a great friend of Rudyard Kipling, who, at the time lived at Bateman's in Burwash, Sussex. Kipling would often visit Haggard there, arriving by car, often at great speed.
