Mexican fencepost cactus is a tall cactus with columnar trunks that grow slowly to 12 feet () and may reach 20 feet () in height. At its base is blooming desert bluebells, a species of flowering plant also known by the common names desertbells, California-bluebell, desert scorpionweed, and desert Canterbury bells. Its true native range is within the borders of California in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts
