Cliff House, Hythe, United Kingdom. Architect: Foster Lomas, 2013. Exterior view towards sea from Balcony.

The name of this house reflects its situation. Cliff House is located on the Kent coast, overlooking the English Channel. Its steeply sloping site is part of a larger garden belonging to an Edwardian house. The clients wanted a four-bedroom home that would take advantage of the views and provide a retirement home, accommodating both children and grandchildren. A key requirement was that the new house should not impact on southerly views from the existing Edwardian house. Relationships between the new house, the slope, the existing house and the view drove the project, which is designed by Foster Lomas Architects, from the beginning. Locally, the geology and soil conditions are prone to slippage and this had to be given consideration. Local planning policy also required the design to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 3.
