The gov-ernor general of the province set out with his regulartroops and field-pieces, and occupied the region aboutDalvorig, but made no attack at the time. In an in-terview with some of the leading Armenians hequestioned them as to why they did not submit tothe government and pay their taxes. The siege continued throughout the winter. Uponthe advent of the spring of 1894 the Kurdish tribeswere ordered to attack the entire Sassoun district,which included over forty vilhiges. It is needless tosay that they responded, coming, to the number oftwenty thousand, from every direction. In a few pre-liminary skirmishes several Kurds fell. The Kurdssecured the bodies of two of their slain countrymen,and, after mutilating the corpses, carried them to theheadquarters of the provincial government at Bitlisand showed them to the vali.
