Abraham Hathaway Howland was born of Quaker parents in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1802. In 1846 he obtained a charter for the legislature of Massachusetts to manufacture, cotton, wool, and iron under the name of Wamsutta Mills. He was the first mayor of New Bedford, serving from 1847-1851.
