Grey sky white sunshine view salt marsh with water pool towards sea ice with oystercatchers at the edge of calm seawater, Fairhaven, Lancashire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of sea ice, several centimetres thick. Grey sky, white sunshine view, looking south across the River Ribble Estuary to the Southport Coastline, of salt marsh with water pool and oyster catchers on sea ice at the margins of calm seawater, between Fairhaven and St Annes.
