Traditional rope bullfights at Terceira island in Azores
Tourada à corda é um evento tauromáquico tradicional da ilha Terceira nos Açores. Esta modalidade tauromáquica é específica dos Açores e caracteriza-se pela corrida de 4 touros da raça brava da ilha Terceira ao longo de um arraial montado numa rua, o percurso da tourada é regra geral de 500 m. Os animais são soltos um a um e controlados por uma corda atada ao seu pescoço (daí a designação do tipo de tourada) e segura por seis homens que conduzem a lide e impedem a sua saída para além do troço de via estipulado. A lide é então conduzida por membros do público, em geral rapazes, embora qualquer pessoa possa participar. Após a lide, os animais são devolvidos às pastagens para um período de descanso de cerca de oito dias, para poderem ser utilizados em mais touradas durante a temporada que vai de Maio a Outubro. Rope bullfights is a traditional bullfighting from the Terceira island in the Azores, believed to be the oldest tradition of popular festivities of the archipelago. The bullfight consists of four bulls of the brava bread typical from the Terceira island, they are released one by one on to a stretch of road usually around 500m long, the animal is then controlled by a rope tied to his neck (hence the name of the type of bullfight) and held by six men who control the bull and prevent the animal from going beyond the stretch of road arranged for the bullfight. Anyone from the public is then welcome to join in on the bullfight. When the bullfight is over the animals are returned to their pasture for at least eight days rest so they can be used again in another bullfight throughout the season which lasts from May to October.
