A black gondola always painted black required by a sumptuary law of Venice in the gondola boat builder's yard at Squero di San Trovaso on the bank of the Rio de S Trovaso. It is a short walk from the Ponte dell'Accademia (Accademia bridge) in Venice in northern Italy. The Tyrolean-style wooden structured yard is one of the three remaining and the oldest gondola workshop in the city. The yard has been in the business since the 17th century, and its main business is refurbishing gondolas and only on the odd occasion, build a new gondola, The types of wood used to build or repair a gondola are mahogany, cherry, fir, walnut, oak, elm, and lime. On average it takes 40-45 days to build a hand-crafted gondola costing up to €20,0000. There were approximately 10,000 gondolas on the canals in the 17/18th centuries. Today, there are about 400 gondolas giving visitors a serenade tour through the quaint narrow canal backwaters.
