The cooling room measures 30 x 40 feet and over- head is stored 250 tons of ice. The tem- perature is kept at 50° all the time, thus insuring the best conditions for the stock after it is cut. Connecting with the packing house is a range of 15 houses 600 feet long, planted entirely in . can Beauty and other varieties of roses. The Beauties are planted on raised benches with tile bottoms, while the other varieties are planted on semi- solid benches. The latter are built up from the ground about 12 inches with cinders and four inches of good black soil, then 3-inch tiles on top of which are 8 inches of soil. It is in here that the rose plants are grown. The reason for placing the soil directly on the cinders is to insure the roots remaining in black soil should they go down between the tiles. The success of this style of bench is amply demonstrated by the quality of stock grown by this firm. Directly opposite the rose houses is an immense boiler room which was de- signed to heat the entire plant. As it required years of experience to bring this to a state of completion, a descrip- tion will be interesting. In the center of the house is a steel chimney stack, 135 feet high and 8 feet 6 inches in diameter. When one considers that an ordinary coal car could be placed in- side this stack, an idea of its size is 'obtained. It is built on very high ground and towers 250 feet above Lake Michigan. Inside the house, 10 boilers have been placed side by side, on a piece of solid concrete foundation, 24 inches thick by 125 feet long and 24 feet wide. The boilers are fed by mechanical stokers and have forced draft. Three large fans produce a blast which keeps the fires under absolute control all the time. The boilers are connect- ed with a steam header 100 feet long, having a goose-necked U in the center to
