Practically all ofthe grain stored has no other transportation outlet than bythis railway. On an average the elevators built at the smallertowns ship from 80,000 to 100,000 bu. of grain per year. Thegrain associations also undertake to handle farm implements, tile, fuel, etc., and thus each elevator means about 150 carloadsof freight per year. Double-end sidings from 800 ft. to 1000 are built at all elevators. The new town of Alleman furnishes an example of thegrowth of a community when assisted by the railway. Threeyears ago at the present location of this town there was only ahighway crossing flag stop with a steam railway line about 5miles distant in either direction on the intersecting Fort Dodge, Des Moines & Southern—Standard Motor Car The electric railway traffic department urged the erection of agrain elevator at this point, which was built by an associationof farmers. Since that time a small town with a bank, two ele-vators, general store, lumber yard and stockyards has sprungup here and a substantial traffic is obtained in and out of thisstation. The railroad company has built stockyards at each of thetowns along its route. These stockyards are not makeshiftpens, but are designed to give stock buyers a good place in whichto keep animals while they are collecting them for little additional money required to build good accommoda-tions for the cattle is found to be an excellent investment be-cause it encourages the development ofthe stock-handling business. Anothersource of considerable traffic is the excel-lent quality of shale and clay found in thevalley of the Des Moines River at clay is delivered direct
