Thishas resulted in a loss of 421 sq. ft. of heating surface in thetubes which is slightly offset, so far as actual area is concerned,by a gain of 19 sq. ft. in the firebox, leaving a net loss of 402 tives, in spite of the fact that they are considerably deeper, theratio is but 3 36. The grate is of the usual finger type, rockingin four sections and with a dump grate at the rear. It will be seen that the advantages offered by the Gainesarrangement in connection with the location of the firebox inrelation to the driving wheels have proved valuable in this caseand the front mud ring is located almost directly over the rear. Type Superheate sq. ft. As a steam maker, however, it is probable that thisboiler will prove even better than the others. It is known thatthe front 2 ft. of a 20 ft. tube is comparatively inefficient whileon the contrary, a gain in firebox heating surface is of verydecided value and especially when the improved combustiongiven by the Gaines arrangement of brick arch and air inlets driving axle. In order to give the necessary clearance the mudring is inclined sharply upward on the sides, at the point ofconnection of the steel casting supporting the brick wall, andreaches practically the level of the bottom of the barrel. Thelowest point is 8 in. below the level of the front corners. Flexiblestaybolts are used throughout the combustion chamber section 364 RAILWAY AGE GAZETTE, MECHANICAL EDITION. Vol. 87, No. 7.
