When an extra guard or coupleris needed, the applicant is given a physical examination andhis sight tested. If everything is satisfactory the manstarts in with 100 per cent at the beginning of the monthnext succeeding his appointment. At the first of the nextmonth 2 per cent is added for seniority allowance to hisaverage if he has not violated any of the rules and regula-tions of the company. These records are kept in the main. office on cards, and for each employe there is a completehistory of his services with the company. By this meansthe officials have accurate information concerning everyemploye, and can tell almost at a glance how faithful anyone has been in the performance of duty. Whenever there is a violation of any rule, or any man hasbeen guilty of negligence or bad judgment, the superinteml-ent at once consults his record. If the mans record is goodand nothing serious has resulted, a bulletin is posted givinga warning or reprimand. If the action calls for severerpunishment a certain per cent is deducted from the mansrecord, and a bulletin is posted in the four trainmens roomsgiving an account of the violation and whatever advice isnecessary. These bulletins, which all the trainmen see. arca large factor in educating the men in the perforrfiance oftheir duties.
