Tongue anatomy. Artwork sequence of magnified views of the human mouth and tongue, with the magnification increasing from left to right. The tongue in a mouth is at left, with the second image showing the filiform papillae a fungiform papilla (and three taste buds, purple) on the surface of the tongue. The third image is a magnified view of a tastebud, with nerves (blue, also seen in second image) transmitting the sensory information to the brain where it is interpreted as a taste sensation. Filiform paipillae, which are more numerous than taste buds, sense pressure. Taste buds consist of a cluster of taste receptor cells.
