Schmidt telescope and spectrograph. The apparatus seen here is used to analyse the spectrum of the light from the sun and stars, a process known as spectroscopy. This can be used to determine the chemical composition of the stars, and identify different types of stars. This spectrograph is part of a Schmidt telescope located at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh, Scotland. Schmidt telescopes are a type of astronomical camera invented by Bernhard Schmidt in 1930.
